About This Event

Hey there, space cowboys and girls. Put on your flight suits and prepare for launch because this edition of Flashband takes us into warp speed and out into the cosmos! Whether you’re radioing to “Major Tom,”  finding the “drops of Jupiter in her hair,” or feeling a bit “intergalactic” and “planetary,” this Flashband has tons of killer song options that will undoubtedly deliver a *stellar* show (see what I did there?). This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission, and we couldn’t think of any better way to celebrate.

All genres are on the table. If it fits an outer space theme, put your band together and play it!

We’re very excited to be at a brand new venue for this show: Public Bar Live! DC just gained this great new venue in Dupont Circle with pro sound and lighting and a very cool vibe. Come help christen this newest addition to our awesome, exploding music scene! Learn more about the new venue here.

The tally below shows how many slots are available at each instrument and will be updated a few times a day as people sign up.

We are now FULL. Any sign up will be removed from the event and placed on the waitlist after the jam. Read below for info on how the waitlist works.

**We have to update this list manually. That means there may be fewer spots than it appears. If you sign up when we are already full at your instrument (even if the below tally doesn’t indicate as such), you will be bumped to the waitlist. Waitlisters do not attend the jam and basically act as “free agents” that bands may or may choose to add to their group afterwards. Any waitlisters that do not end up in a band will receive a refund.

Please make sure that you list your desired instrument in your musician profile.  If you have more than one instrument listed, please email graham@flashband.org with (a) which instrument you intend to play for this showcase, and (b) whether you are willing to play a different instrument in order to help get the right balance of musicians.

  • Drums: 9 of 9
  • Bass: 9 of 9
  • Vocals: 9 of 9
  • Guitar: 13 of 13
  • Keys/Horns/Other: 4 of 4

[Updated 9:09 August 10th]

**All participants MUST attend both the Meet & Greet Jam and the Showcase. If you sign up and are not able to make it to the Meet & Greet Jam, you will be bumped to the waitlist. We believe this policy improves the quality of everyone's experience and strengthens the community aspect of Flashband. Thanks for your understanding!**

**CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refund if you let the organizer know more than 48 hours in advance of the Meet & Greet Jam if you are unable to attend. Refunds will not be processed within 48 hours of the jam or after.

Q: Can my band do a song with some random fleeting reference to a star/sun/moon?

A: Meh. Not gonna be too strict about it. If the song seems space-themed to you, it’s your call. Just remember it’s usually more fun for the audience if the song is really spot on in the theme.

Q: Can I bring an actual rocket and launch it in the middle of the show?

A: Normally I would say heck yes, but this being a new venue and all, I think they wanna keep the roof intact. Sorry, bud.

Q: Did you see that Apollo tribute thingy at the Mall?

A: No, but I heard it was cool. Neil Armstrong’s suit is on display at the Air and Space Museum too! Pretty far out.

Q: Whatever, nerd. Will there be astronaut ice cream at the show?

A: That weird, edible colored chalk stuff? No way, that stuff was gross.

Q: Can my band play a space-themed song I/we wrote?

A: Absolutely! Creativity and originals always encouraged.

Q: Can I register even if I won't be at the Meet & Greet Jam?

A: No. If you won't be able to make it to the jam, please refrain from registering until post-jam when your registration will automatically route you onto the waitlist.

If you do register and can't attend the Meet & Greet Jam, you'll be manually bumped to the waitlist to make room for someone who can. Post-jam when the bands are formed, bands will then have the option to pull you off the waitlist to join them as an additional member. If no band adds you, you'll get a refund. Please also scroll up and read the cancellation policy.

Q: Why the rules? Wouldn't it be better just to let us play whatever we want?

A: Ever been to a theme party, and some people just showed up in plain clothes? What a bummer! Themes fuel creativity and are a big part of what make Flashband a good time for the participants and exciting and marketable to audiences. Give it a shot and be creative, and we know you'll dig working within the theme.

Q: What's Flashband and how does it work?

A: Flashband connects musicians to form a one-time band and play a showcase of short high-energy sets one month later.

Here's how it works: You'll form a one-time band at a meet & greet jam, rehearse with your band, then play the show! Typically 40-45 hobbyist musicians participate, and have 4 weeks to prepare a 15-minute set for a Saturday night show. Here's why 2000+ DC area musicians love Flashband:

  • Meet & jam with local hobbyists like you (no sketchy craigslist)
  • Play a Saturday night gig at a sweet venue just by showing up
  • Skip worrying about show logistics, backline, and promo
  • Get professional photos of you rocking out on stage
  • Make new friends in the music scene
  • Enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience among your peers

Retro space pop, progrock-et, themes from out of this world, hip space hop. Leaning towards 'progrock-et' as a genre/concept.

Graham all three suggested songs are for male vocals. Can you decide one or two songs so that we can accomodate the female singers too?
