About This Event

For a special post-Valentine’s Day Flashband showcase, we turn to what may be the song topic most written about - love. If the day for lovers didn’t pan out as well as you hoped, put your sadness to use by joining up with some fellow musicians and singing some songs in the Heartbreak Ballads show. We’ll have 40+ musicians form about 8 temporary bands that each do a fifteen minute set to sing songs about love and loss; at the end of their set, as with all Flashband showcases, the bands will break up as well.

The bands are practiced up, the songs are probably still being written, but they'll all be ready to perform as soon as show day comes on Sunday, February 16! Come see all the bands put on their best stuff:

Gypsy Sally's

3401 K St. NW (under the Key Bridge)

$10 at the door

The venue has tables and a great food menu, so come have some dinner, drinks and watch the music. Get there early if you want a table, though, last time they filled up before the first band went on and we nearly sold out the venue!

Meet-and-greet jam:

All participating musicians must attend the meet-and-greet jam, where musicians cycle through 3-4 concurrent jam sessions and play with all the other participants, and then begin forming their bands. Sunday, January 19th, 4pm The meet-and-greet jam is the start of the process for this show! All participants will be emailed information about the meet-and-greet in the week beforehand.

The rules:

We'll have 40+ musicians in 8 bands that first formed just one month before the show. Each band must do a 15 minute set.

- At least one song should play on the ‘Heartbreak Ballads’ theme (or the whole set if you’re especially sad)

- At least one original song written as a band since forming

- No pre-existing bands

The Location:

Gypsy Sally's 3401 K Street NW, Washington DC Sunday, February 16, 5pm (first band at 6) We’ll be back again at Gypsy Sally’s, whose stage features Americana-focused acts. For this Flashband genres can be more diverse than our Americana Bandstand show but should still draw from influences like blues, country, jazz and rock.

Songs of love lost and reflected to get you thinking about what to play.

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers)

“This house just ain’t no home anytime she goes away”

Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right (Bob Dylan)

“You just kinda wasted my precious time. Don’t think twice it’s all right.”

What Does It Mean (Bombadil)

“what does it mean when you say "okay goodbye" after i say i love you one million times”

And even more:
