--

For this edition of Flashband, we celebrate the styles, rhythms, and top artists of latin music! From bachata to samba, from cumbia to reggaeton, from salsa to merengue, the music of Spanish and Portuguese speakers around the world has long delivered a wealth of diverse styles. With every variety featuring a unique and captivating rhythm, it’s no wonder that latin music makes us move! It is truly a participatory art form, and we expect the audience at this showcase will be no exception. In other words, look forward to a dance party!

We are extremely grateful for the rich cultural contributions of our latinx brothers and sisters, and we can’t wait to celebrate them at this show!

The tally below shows how many participants are signed up at each instrument and will be updated a few times a day as people sign up.

We are now FULL AT VOCALS, DRUMS, and BASS. If you would like to join the waitlist for any of these roles, please wait until after Jan. 26 to sign up, so that you can be added to the waitlist. For more information on the waitlist, see the FAQ below.

**We have to update this list manually. That means there may be fewer spots than it appears. If you sign up when we are already full at your instrument (even if the below tally doesn’t indicate as such), you will be bumped to the waitlist. Waitlisters do not attend the jam and basically act as “free agents” that bands may or may choose to add to their group afterwards. Any waitlisters that do not end up in a band will receive a refund.

Please make sure that you list your desired instrument in your musician profile.  If you have more than one instrument listed, please email graham@flashband.org with (a) which instrument you intend to play for this showcase, and (b) whether you are willing to play a different instrument in order to help get the right balance of musicians.

  • Drums: 9 of 9

**All participants MUST attend both the Meet & Greet Jam and the Showcase. If you sign up and are not able to make it to the Meet & Greet Jam, you will be bumped to the waitlist. We believe this policy improves the quality of everyone's experience and strengthens the community aspect of Flashband. Thanks for your understanding!**

**CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refund if you let the organizer know more than 48 hours in advance of the Meet & Greet Jam if you are unable to attend. Refunds will not be processed within 48 hours of the jam or after.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to identify as latino/a to play this showcase?

A: Nope! All that's needed is a love for the music. :)

Q: I'm not latino/a. Can I wear a sombrero and big cartoonish mustache for the show?

A: We ask that you please do your best to avoid cultural appropriation in any way that might be offensive to our latinx brothers and sisters. If you are unsure, ask someone who identifies as latinx and see what they say. This showcase aims to celebrate the musical contributions of latinx people all over the world, not make them a characiture.

Q: Can I play "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but with a salsa beat? Does that fall within the theme?

A: That's not really the idea, but I suppose if it's part of a medley that's alright. Otherwise, please focus on songs by latinx artists and songs that fit into a style of latin music.

Q: What are the styles of latin music?

A: Sooo many! But to name a few: bachata, cumbia, merengue, salsa, samba, bossa nova, tango, latin pop, indigenous music, rock en español, etc. Here's a useful list.

Q: Can I register even if I won't be at the Meet & Greet Jam?

A: No. If you won't be able to make it to the jam, please refrain from registering until post-jam when your registration will automatically route you onto the waitlist.

If you do register and can't attend the Meet & Greet Jam, you'll be manually bumped to the waitlist to make room for someone who can. Post-jam when the bands are formed, bands will then have the option to pull you off the waitlist to join them as an additional member. If no band adds you, you'll get a refund. Please also scroll up and read the cancellation policy.

Q: It looks like you're full at my instrument/role. Should I sign up anyway?

A: No. In that case, you can send an email to graham@flashband.org and request to join the waitlist. You can also simply wait until after the Meet & Greet Jam, go to the event page, and click "Join the Waitlist." In either case, you won't be charged a registration fee until you are officially added to the showcase.

A: No. If you won't be able to make it to the jam, please refrain from registering until post-jam when your registration will automatically route you onto the waitlist.

Q: How does the waitlist work?

A: Waitlisters do not attend the jam and basically act as “free agents." After the jam, the participants will receive a list of all the waitlisters and will contact you individually if they're interested in adding you to their group. Bands finalize their lineups around two weeks before the show. Any waitlisters that do not end up in a band by that time will receive a refund.

Q: How does the Meet & Greet Jam work? How should I prepare?

A: The purpose is simply for the participants to get together, get a feel for each other's styles, and decide who would be a good fit for their band. Participants are assigned to play in one of 9 different rooms for three different jam rotations so that everyone plays with as many different participants as possible. At the end of the event, we bring all of the participants back together to mingle and decide who they'd like to play with. If any of that sounds confusing, don't sweat it! We'll have a big meet-up at the beginning of the event to explain how it works and answer any questions.

All rooms at 7DC are fully outfitted with amps, full drumkits, PA, microphones, etc. Musicians are only required to bring their instruments (except for keyboardists who may play in some of the rooms where we have keys set up.)

You can prepare by learning the three songs suggested in the Participant Details under "Songs to Learn for the Jam." (If no songs are currently listed there, not to worry. We will send you an email notifying you of the suggested songs for the jam as soon as they are chosen.)

Q: Is this show all ages?

A: No. Pearl Street Warehouse is 21+.

Q: Why the rules? Wouldn't it be better just to let us play whatever we want?

A: Ever been to a theme party, and some people just showed up in plain clothes? What a bummer! Themes fuel creativity and are a big part of what make Flashband a good time for the participants and exciting and marketable to audiences. Give it a shot and be creative, and we know you'll dig working within the theme.

Q: What's Flashband and how does it work?

A: Flashband connects musicians to form a one-time band and play a showcase of short high-energy sets one month later.

Here's how it works: You'll form a one-time band at a meet & greet jam, rehearse with your band, then play the show! Typically 40-45 hobbyist musicians participate, and have 4 weeks to prepare a 15-minute set for a Saturday night show. Here's why 2000+ DC area musicians love Flashband:

  • Meet & jam with local hobbyists like you (no sketchy craigslist)
  • Play a Saturday night gig at a sweet venue just by showing up
  • Skip worrying about show logistics, backline, and promo
  • Get professional photos of you rocking out on stage
  • Make new friends in the music scene
  • Enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience among your peers

Anyone have any thoughts on tackling this genre? Can we get a horn section willing to roam between bands? Latin percussion kit?
